The Joint

The Joint . . . the Chiropractic Place celebrated their membership in the Bossier Chamber of Commerce with a ribbon cutting on March 9, 2012. The Joint offers an alternative approach to healthcare, based on the age old practice of restoring balance by promoting your body’s ability to heal itself. The Joint is the place for chiropractic treatment, chiropractic sports medicine and general chiropractic care and adjustments. Say goodbye to back pain, head aches, sports injuries, neck pain and other body soreness. It’s time to welcome in wellness, integrated health and the ability to feel young again.

The Joint has a new approach to healthcare. They explained it as sort of a concierge medicine. There are no appointments, no hidden fees, just affordable, convenient and quality chiropractic care for everyone, at any age and fitness level. Best of all you don’t need to worry about insurance co-pays because at The Joint, adjustments cost less than most co-pays. You can choose Pay-Per Adjustment or Membership Plans. An individual monthly plan is $49 per month and you are able to get up to 4 adjustments with no appointments and minimal wait time. The idea of the monthly plan is very similar to what you might see at your local gym. You are given a key tag and you scan it each time that you walk in. Their plans are affordable and convenient.

I’ve had headaches, back, neck and shoulder pain for a majority of my life. I’ve had doctor exams, x-rays, and MRI’s, none of which ever provided a reason for the pain. As I walked into the ribbon cutting I wondered if this might be the solution to some of my pain. I was excited by the possibility of some relief. For the ribbon cutting introductory price of $19 I was given a consultation and an adjustment. Dr. David Trueblood consulted with me and immediately told me that my hips were out of alignment and even told me where he thought I was having pain. He was right. Within minutes after my adjustment, my headache was gone. I couldn’t believe it. I signed up for the monthly plan! After the next few visits, my overall pain had decreased tremendously. The pain and stiffness that I had have improved and I can’t say enough good things about The Joint. I’ve found that I can stop for an adjustment on the way to a meeting and generally be in and out of the office in under five minutes. This has been a wonderful experience for me.

The Joint . . . the Chiropractic Place is located at 2634 Beene Blvd at Airline Dr. and I-220 in Bossier City, Louisiana.

Don’t Cut Your Own Grass!

It’s that time of year again. That time of year that I absolutely hate . . . Grass cutting time!! It’s not that I hate the whole process. I love my yard to look great and have freshly cut edges. It’s just now that my son is in college and I’m a single gal, the last thing I want to do with my free time is push a mower. Well, I’ve got a solution . . . Stephens Services LLC. THEY CUT GRASS!!

Stephens Services LLC celebrated joining the Bossier Chamber of Commerce in February with a ribbon cutting. I personally work with Matt as a Diplomat for the Chamber. The first time that I met Matt was at the Chamber Business Expo. Matt is one of those guys that you don’t forget. He is very professional and made an impression on me. Matt is a member of the Louisiana Army National Guard and is an active member of the community. In addition to being a Diplomat for the Bossier Chamber, he is a Keep Bossier Beautiful Board Member; serves on the Military Relations Committee; Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce; and the Young Professionals Initiative.

In Case You Haven’t Heard

When I was a kid, my dad told me that as I got older time would fly by faster. Boy was he right! It seems like yesterday that we rolled into 2012 and now the first quarter of the year is almost gone. As a Bossier Chamber of Commerce Diplomat, I am not required to write a blog about new businesses in Bossier, but I made a personal goal when I started to report on those duties. I’m not sure if time is really going faster, or I’m just slacking, but I have been falling short on my goal. I thought I’d better catch up before I give up all together. In case you haven’t heard about some of the businesses in Bossier City that have celebrated since January, here’s what you’ve missed:

January 30Newk’s Express Café celebrated their Grand Opening with a Ribbon Cutting. Newk’s is an express casual dining experience in a refreshing and stylish atmosphere with an emphasis on freshness and flavor. Serving fresh tossed salads, oven baked sandwiches, California style pizzas, made-from-scratch soups and homemade cakes from Newk’s open kitchen.

Ruth (Catering Manager) & Jeff (General Manager)

On my first visit, I enjoyed the half sandwich and soup combination. The Shrimp Po-Boy was delicious. My personal favorite menu item is the Debra Pizza. A pizza topped with grilled chicken breast, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, roma tomatoes and pesto. Fabulous! I was impressed with the friendly service and the warm atmosphere. As info, the name “Newk’s” does not refer in any way to microwaved food, the name is a play off of the founder’s name “Newcomb”. Not to worry, the food is made and served fresh! Newk’s is located at 2501 Beene Blvd, Suite 100, Bossier City, LA, 71111. Check out their menu

A Full Body Experience

Dr. QuincyAs a child of the 70’s/80’s, I dreamed of being the next Dr. R. Quincy. If you don’t know who Dr. Quincy is, he was just the most awesome, albeit fictional, Medical Examiner ever to cross the tv screen. Each week I watched as he dramatically followed the clues of the body that lead him to uncover great mysteries. It was during those days that I decided that I wanted to be a forensic pathologist. Not just any ordinary pathologist, but one that studied BRAINS!! The body holds so many wonderful mysteries and I was ready to learn all about them. That is until I really thought more about the processes involved in searching for those clues. First of all, I never would have made it through medical school. And secondly, I have a hard time putting a band-aid on injuries. No, it was a great dream, but one that I’d have to dismiss.

A couple of years ago, I heard about an exhibit in Dallas called “Bodies Revealed“, an exhibition of preserved real anatomical specimens. I was so interested in visiting the exhibit, but never found the time to get to Dallas. I thought I had missed my opportunity. Knock, Knock, Knock! Yes that opportunity has arrived again, yet this time it’s right here in my neighboring town of Shreveport, LA. Sci-port Louisiana’s Science Center and the Louisiana Office of Tourism is providing our area with a unique full body experience. BODIES REVEALED opens to the public on January 28, 2012 and takes visitors through galleries providing an up-close look inside the skeletal, muscular, reproductive, respiratory, circulatory and other systems of the human body. Many of the whole body specimens are dissected in vivid athletic poses, allowing the visitor to relate to everyday activities. One specimen in particular sparked my curiosity about how many muscles one might use while bowling. According to bowl.com, bowling is a game that can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of age and body type, as a means of social gathering and physical activity. Bowling requires the use of every major muscle in the body, so it’s important to make sure these muscles are loose and ready for physical activity in order to reduce the risk of injury, increase your ball speed, and increase your consistency. Seeing the bodies on exhibit really helped me put together how fascinating and complex our bodies are.

RobinAlong with the exhibit, Dr. Roy Glover serves as the Chief Medical Director and Spokesperson for BODIES REVEALED. Dr. Glover is Associate Professor Emeritus of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Premier Exhibitions. He taught Anatomy for more than 30 years at the University of Michigan Medical School. He is the recipient of numerous research and teaching awards. As I stood at the hands-on exhibit, I spoke with Dr. Glover, while holding a real brain. Yes, a real brain – I felt like Dr. Quincy! Although, seeing the interior of the bodies was facinating, what interested me most is the people who actually gave of themselves to make the exhibit possible. Dr. Glover explained to me that there are a few ways that specimens are obtained. One way is by people donating their bodies to science. He said that a person can go to any local medical school and sign a donor card. Once the person dies, the only responsibility of the family is to transport their loved one to the school. After the school has accepted and studied the body, the remains are cremated and then a memorial service is held for the family. Students who studied the body are present at the service to thank the families for the gift that their loved one provided.

Bodies RevealedThe BODIES REVEALED Exhibition features 12 full body specimens and over 185 partial specimens and organs. The human body specimens are preserved through a revolutionary technique called polymer preservation and can take more than a year to prepare.

Bodies RevealedThe Exhibition is expected to increase tourism from the tri-state area to Louisiana, specifically downtown Shreveport. “The Louisiana Office of Tourism is pleased to partner with Sci-Port for [the] BODIES REVEALED Exhibition,” Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne said. “This great Exhibition will have a positive impact on the community and the region’s tourism industry.” Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center is located at 820 Clyde Fant Parkway on the downtown Shreveport Riverfront. For information regarding hours, IMAX showing or special programs, call 318-424-3466, toll free at 877-724-7678. The exhibit will run from January 28, 2012 to May 21, 2012. Online ticketing is available at www.sciport.org.

I may not ever be Dr. Quincy, but this exhibit made me remember that dream I had so long ago. Make sure you don’t miss this awesome event.

Never Too Late

Edward JonesI’ve never been accused of being a punctual person and on Wednesday, I proved that point. Typically when there is a ribbon cutting or Grand Opening event, I like to arrive a few minutes early to do some networking. I am quite sure that my calendar entry showing 11:30 am as the start time for the Bossier Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting for Edward Jones was accurate. I can’t imagine that I could have incorrectly added the event. Ok, excuses aside . . . I am embarrassed to say that my arrival at the ribbon cutting was 20 minutes late, therefore I didn’t get the scoop on all of the great things that are happening at this new business. I’d love to share all the things that I learned, but I guess it’s never too late and will resort to just telling you the basics.

Wil AdamsWil Adams is a financial advisor with Edward Jones. A ribbon cutting was held on Wed, Jan 25, 2012 to mark his membership into the Bossier Chamber of Commerce. Offices are located at 2091 Stockwell Road, Suite 4, Bossier City. Wil can be reached at (318) 549-9155. I ran across an article that Wil wrote for the Bossier Voices, “Delay in investing could prove costly” click here to read the full article.

I love my Job!

Robin & JanaHave I told you lately how much I love my job?

As a marketing representative of Holiday Lanes, I “get to” volunteer as a Bossier Chamber of Commerce Diplomat. Doing so allows me to connect and network with people in the community and share with them the “AWESOMENESS” that is Holiday Lanes. When I first began my adventure with the Chamber of Commerce, I wasn’t sure if it would be worth the time or effort. I already had plenty to do and wasn’t sure I would be able to commit to the time requirements.

Bowl for the Cure

Bowl for the Cure

I also had a twinge of guilt that I wasn’t at my desk working away on bowling events or promotions. That feeling soon faded. I have come to realize the value of being a Bossier Chamber Diplomat. Each week, I learn something new about our community. I engage with other companies and organizations which often give us the opportunity to partner and cross-promote.

DiplomatsOver the years, I have done many things. I’ve been a graphic artist, a print shop manager, a railroad safety and rules coordinator/trainer, a web ministry trainer and now a marketing director. I always had my ear to the ground listening for that next opportunity to come my way. I never thought that working for a bowling alley would be the place that I would find my happiness and stop listening for other opportunities. I have found my place. And with that I have found a way to make a difference in my community by volunteering as a Diplomat. I LOVE MY JOB!

Fred’s Brings Year End Growth

Fred's Super Dollar Ribbon Cutting2011 is near the end, but that doesn’t stop Bossier Parish from growing. Fred’s Super Dollar Store will help Bossier Parish see a year end growth in new business. Fred’s opened a new location in Haughton and celebrated with a community and Bossier Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting on December 30th. The fan fare was spectacular. I’d guess there were at least 100 people in attendance for the event. Supporters of the new business included everyone from local citizens, the Police Chief, Fire Department, Mayor and Representative Henry Burns. Haughton High School band and cheerleaders provided a pep-rally spirit. Fred's Super DollarFred’s expresses an interest to serve in both local and national organizations. Fred’s Super Dollar showed their interest in the Haughton community by presenting Haughton School’s with two checks for $1000 each.

According to their website: Fred’s Super Dollar traces its history back to an original store in Coldwater, Mississippi opened in 1947, today Fred’s is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee and operates almost 700 discount general merchandise stores, including 24 franchised Fred’s stores, mainly across the southeastern states. With a unique store format and strategy that combines the best elements of a discount dollar store, drug store and mass merchant, Fred’s stores stock more than 12,000 frequently purchased items that address the everyday needs of its customers. This merchandise includes nationally recognized brand name products, proprietary Fred’s label products, and lower-priced, and off-brand products.

Fred's Super Dollar Store

Jeff Berg (Marshall, TX), Marlin McDonald (Jonesboro, LA) and Butch Willis (Haughton, LA)

The vision of Fred’s is to see a smile on every customer’s face. With stocked shelves and several really good sales, there was no shortage of smiles on the faces this morning. Fred’s encourages their team members to provide help in succeeding throughout their organization. It was evident of the support as managers from other stores around the area were in attendance to cheer on Butch Willis, General Manager of the store.

Fred's Super DollarThe Haughton store is currently a retail facility. There are plans and hopes for a pharmacy in the future. The staff is very friendly and helpful. What a great way to end the year. Bossier Parish on the grow! I encourage you to stop by, buy a few things, say hi to Butch and make sure you tell them you read my blog. Fred’s Super Dollar is located at 200 N. New Orleans Flavor

Copeland’s of New Orleans unveiled the new prototype restaurant in Shreveport for restaurants in six states, which include Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Georgia, Maryland and Florida. The Shreveport renovation includes over $1 million and revamps the restaurant both inside and out. Mr. Al Copeland, Jr., Chairman of the Board for Al Copeland Investments, was in attendance and told us that the renovation is designed to bring the New Orleans flavor to Shreveport. The atmosphere will now have a more Southern Plantation feel and will blend well with the flavors of the signature foods served within the restaurant. A new bakery display case greets you as you enter the restaurant. The bar has been renovated with a sophisticated look. The addition of a private dining room with seating for 65 makes for a great location for business meetings and parties. Mr. Copeland said “This is an exciting time for the Copeland Family of Restaurants and Copeland’s of New Orleans in Shreveport as we launch our new prototype.”

One of the perks of being involved in the community is getting invitations to these awesome events, especially events that include food. So, let’s speak of the food . . . on display was a scrumptious smorgasbord of culinary treasures. There was Buffalo Spring Rolls, Crawfish Bow-tie Pasta, Shrimp Pasta, Stuffed Mushrooms, Biscuits from scratch, Red Beans with Rice, Steamed Vegetables, and among other dishes, Bayou Broccoli, which by the way is fried broccoli – yum! I’m not usually a salad girl, but my favorite item on the table was the Apple Almond Blue Salad (Fresh apple, toasted almonds, crumbled Bleu cheese, sun dried tomato, red onion, mixed greens, Honey Balsamic vinaigrette.) OH MY – this was fabulous! Of course a visit to Copeland’s would be incomplete without dessert. I had the Bananas Foster, but was checking out the white chocolate bread pudding. Oh so many choices, and just not enough time or tummy space. Several of the secrets behind the great flavors at Copeland’s is that they prepare from scratch with fresh ingredients, sauces are stock-based, homemade from natural drippings and fresh vegetables. The chefs at Copeland’s use only fresh, never frozen vegetables, steak, fish and chicken. “We take pride in our fresh-from-scratch New Orleans flavors and we are committed to serving our guests” said Mr. Copeland.

Copeland’s of New Orleans is located at 1665 E. Bert Kouns Industrial Loop in Shreveport, LA. (near Youree Drive) The restaurant is managed by Steven Thrash and is open Monday through Thursday, 11 am to 10 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to 11 pm, and on Sunday from 10 am to 10 pm. This location will feature a Sunday Jazz Brunch from 10 am to 3 pm. Stop by to taste some of the New Orleans flavor and make sure you tell them you read my blog.

Have you ever climbed through a Fox Hole?

The question is, “have you ever climbed through a fox hole?” Before today, I could honestly say “no”, but now is a different story. That’s because this evening I participated in the production of Fantastic Mister Fox at Artspace in Shreveport, Louisiana. You’ll notice I didn’t say “attended” or “viewed” – I said “participated”. Participated is the only way that I can describe this spectacular interactive puppet show that is adapted from Ronald Dahl’s book Fantastic Mister Fox and takes you on an imaginative cardboard journeyThe production was created by Arthur Mintz and originally opened in New Orleans during 2010. After a very successful run in New Orleans, Mr. Mintz brought the show to Shreveport. The show was intended to end in November, but has been extended through December 31, 2011.

Upon entering the world of Mr. Fox, I wasn’t sure if I was walking into a play, a puppet show or a film. I soon realized that I was somewhat at a loss for words. Several times throughout the adventure, I realized I had my mouth open in awe. The dumbstruck feeling occurred almost immediately as our narrator extraordinaire Uncle Cookie began to speak. Although he was a real live person, he was as animated as any of the puppets, and helped draw the audience into the story. I don’t want to tell you too much about the presentation because you really have to experience it for yourself. I’ll tell you this, the set is created entirely from recycled/reclaimed cardboard boxes and contact cement and took 5 months to build. This is not a “stay in your seat” kind of show. You actually feel as if you diverge 20 feet underground through fox holes that enter into the FANTASTIC world of Mr. Fox. The group that I participated with was a blend of children and adults. I made an effort to leave my adult brain at the door and pretend like I was a kid again. During the show, I was intentional about watching the expressions on other people’s faces. It was spectacular watching everyone enjoy themselves. In fact, there was one little guy who could hardly contain his excitement. But, my favorite moment was when I saw a “30-something” grown man, rolling on the floor with laughter. It was a treat to my heart.

Few side notes about the show: Wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes because you will be traveling through tunnels and slides in this great world. I’d recommend not bringing anything you have to carry, like your purse or a jacket. It gets a little warm in those fox holes. For those who aren’t interested in the climbing or sliding, there is a walk-thru options.

If you are within driving distance to the Shreveport-Bossier area, it’s worth making the trip. It’s an artistic fantasy that is great fun for children and adults. I had two teenager friends with me and they both loved the show. Artspace is located at 710 Texas Street Shreveport, LA 71101 — (318) 673-6535. Order tickets online

It’s time for you to take the journey. Get your tickets now and tell Mr. Fox you read my blog.
