I attended the Bossier Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting at Jaded the Boutique on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised to find a full house. A fashion show was on the agenda and there were plenty of people excitedly waiting to see the line of exclusive clothing. As I looked around, it made me wish (only for a hot second) that I had a little baby, because they have ultra-cute infant clothing. I was ooh-ing and ahh-ing over them. Definitely saw some cute gift ideas for the babies on my list.

Jessica Williamson is the owner of Jaded the Boutique and it was very obvious that she has put a lot of time and heart into her new business. She was supported by her pastor at the ribbon cutting and many of her friends. Something that I just have to mention is the table of goodies. Natalie Williamson provided the confections for the day. There were mini-cupcakes, regular sized cupcakes and I have to say, the cake-pops were to die for.

Cake Pops - sorry pic is blurry

I tried to find out if Natalie had a business that sold the yummy treats, but they said “no, she just made them for the event.” What a great testament of support to Jessica.

More Power!

Bossier Power Equipment Ribbon Cutting

Bossier Power Equipment Ribbon Cutting

Ok people, I walked into the new location of Bossier Power Equipment and was simply amazed. Where else can you go to look at super power equipment and feel like you are at a gift shop for the handyman, or woman in my case? I did not expect that when I went to this ribbon cutting that I would walk away really, really wanting to buy a Gravely Pro-Turn 200. Wouldn’t I look great cutting my lawn with that?

Bossier Power Equipment Ribbon Cutting

Charlie, Bonnie & Mayor Walker

Charlie and Bonnie Williamson humbly showed us around their beautiful facility. Mayor Walker mentioned that this was the first time he had been to an equipment store where the women were just as impressed as the men. This is definitely not the equipment store of the past. Their staff was on hand to answer questions about the array of products and information about their business. I was impressed that there was a great mix of both men and women available to help.
Previously located at Meadowview Dr & Hwy 80, Bossier Power Equipment moved to this location because the city purchased the store for a road project. The new Benton Road location is like a mini shrine for power equipment, in fact, Charlie told us that they also hold church services at this location on Sundays. But, don’t get me wrong, I’m certain they aren’t worshiping the power equipment. These are definitely faithful followers of the Lord.

Bossier Power Equipment has been serving the Shreveport and Bossier area proudly for over 20 years. It doesn’t matter if you are a commercial lawn care professional with a large fleet or a homeowner with a small yard, Bossier Power Equipment has the equipment to suit your needs. They have a first-class Service department and can handle anything from minor tune-ups and maintenance to major overhauls. I know who to call when I can’t get my mower started.

Bossier Power Equipment is located at 2101 Benton Road, Bossier City, LA 71111, phone number (318) 747-6611. They also have a second location at 862 Havens Road, Shreveport, LA 71107. Stop by one of their locations and tell them you read my blog.

Bizzuka + Bossier = Success!

Bizzuka! I’ll say it again, Bizzuka! I just like that name. It has a fun ring to it.

Bizzuka

Bizzuka

Bizzuka is a new web solutions and internet marketing business in the Shreveport-Bossier area. I attended the ribbon cutting at the Bossier Chamber of Commerce office on Wednesday and was quite interested to hear about this company. Being that I dabble in web design, I’m always looking for people that I can connect with to utilize as a resource.

Bizzuka Ribbon Cutting

Bizzuka Ribbon Cutting

Lisa Slifkin and Tim Harms head up the Shreveport team of Bizzuka. The company is based in Lafayette, Louisiana and is one of the premier web development, content management, and internet marketing firms in the U.S. If you don’t believe me, just listen to this: Bizzuka was named to Inc. 5000’s annual list of fastest growing privately owned U.S. companies, ranking with the top ten in Louisiana and number 1513 nationwide.

Casey Cagle, VP of Bus Dev

VP of Bus Dev

Casey Cagle, VP of Business Development, was on hand and told us that the company has been in business for 11 years and is constantly striving to remain on the cusp of technology. They have developed a CMS software called OnDecc that makes your site flexible and extensible like no other. Bizzuka has a staff of 40 people, which not only includes programmers, but graphic designers as well. I know how important it is to have both. As a graphic designer myself, the look of a website is just as important as how it works.

Bizzuka has also been in the business of systems development for mobile applications for 10 years, with an extensive library of over 150 apps that they provide as resources for their clients. Casey told me about one of the apps that they developed that allows people in the Lafayette area to check traffic patterns in their area. He also mentioned that they have many practical apps that are ready for their clients to utilize. Bizzuka’s Component Web Solutions are specifically designed to give you access to functionality you need when you need it. Add internet marketing to the mix and get ready to drive conversions & revenue to your bottom line.

Two-fer Tuesday

Tuesday was a Two-fer when it came to Ribbon Cuttings. I like days where I get to network with lots of people, especially when they are excited about showing their new business. Tuesday was one of those days.

Perfect Touch Day Spa & Salon

The Perfect Touch Day Spa & Salon

The Perfect Touch Day Spa & Salon

Being a volunteer diplomat for the Bossier Chamber of Commerce has been such a wonderful experience. I love finding out all about new businesses in the community. When I drove up, my immediate thought about Perfect Touch Day Spa and Salon was “well this place isn’t new, it’s been around here for years”. I quickly found out that while the business has been around for quite a while under a different name, it is now proudly under new ownership by Charla McCullough. Charla welcomed each of the guests into her new business with a big smile and was ready to show us around.

It’s hard to find anything wrong when visiting a Day Spa and Salon. If I had my choice, I’d spend many hours a week in a day spa. Wouldn’t that be the life?

Perfect Touch Day Spa & Salon

Perfect Touch Day Spa & Salon

The Perfect Touch Day Spa & Salon has all of the services that you would expect to find in a day spa and salon. Those services that help renew and refresh yourself. Charla’s staff pride themselves in going the extra mile to give you that one on one time you need to relax and enjoy yourself. Of course my favorite part of any spa/salon are the massage packages. Perfect Touch provides Swedish, Deep-Tissue, Hot Stone, Hand and Foot massages, as well as Therapeutic Body Wraps. Also on the menu, you will find services which cater to women, men and children, some of which include facials, microdermabrasion, manicures, pedicures, waxing, make-up application, anti-cellulite services and a full service hair salon. They offer packages for occasions such as prom, weddings and after hours business gatherings. I was interested in knowing that they even will host birthday parties. How fun is that?

It was a joy to listen to Charla talk about her new business. She has a keen ability to teach her employees to find their passion and do what they love to do. She shared that she had been an employee at the prior business and it had always been her dream to own a day spa. I think she has achieved her dream. Wonderful and Congratulations Charla!

The Perfect Touch Day Spa and Salon is located at 2369 Airline Drive, Suite 400 in Bossier City. Tell them that you read my blog when you stop by.

On to the second ribbon cutting of the day:

Nawlins SnoBalls

Nawlins SnoBalls Ribbon Cutting

Nawlins SnoBalls Ribbon Cutting

When I was a kid I had two loves, playing with paper dolls and SNOW CONES!! I grew up in South Louisiana where it’s hotter and more humid than the northern Louisiana climate. The only thing that could make a hot day bearable was a snow cone. When I moved to North Louisiana, I found something missing. The snow cone stand on every corner. Where were they?? Ben Berela and his wife, Donnie, obviously asked the same question when they got here, but they did something about it.

Nawlins SnoBalls

Nawlins SnoBalls

Nawlins SnoBalls is a great traditional South Louisiana treat. Ben’s wife is a New Orleans native and she missed those wonderful New Orleans snowballs of her childhood. Ben says when the economy dictated that some of his hours would be cut from his job, they decided to focus their attention on becoming small business owners. We are all lucky that they did.

It’s refreshing to see the tenacity of this family. I think they will be around for a long time. I could hear in his voice that they put their heart and soul into their business. He makes a point to remember his customers. In fact, he said he usually will remember your favorite after a few visits. Hey Ben, my favorite is Cotton Candy!! Although, I hear that the Strawberry Cheesecake is pretty darn good.

Nawlins SnoBalls

Lynda & Debbie like the Strawberry Cheesecake

Ben supports the Bossier City community and offers all government and military employees SnoBalls for $1 while they are on duty. He says it’s his way of giving back.

Nawlins SnoBalls is located at 2225 Airline Drive, in the back parking lot of Central Baptist Church (between Captain D’s and the church). Congratulations and good luck in the future. Stop by and tell them that you read my blog.

I wanna Pizza Pie!

PieWorks Pizza by Design Ribbon Cutting

PieWorks Pizza by Design Ribbon Cutting

Oh Boy . . . another ribbon cutting with food. Not that I mind, but my waistline is expanding by the minute. Today’s ribbon cutting was held at PieWorks Pizza by Design. Many of you may remember the previous PieWorks. I was sad to see it close, but am now so excited to hear that PieWork is back in Bossier.

Let me tell you a few things I learned today about PieWorks. The first and most important thing that I did not know is that PieWorks delivers! Yes, that is a welcomed service and I will be using that for sure. Next, Philip Williamson, operator of PieWorks said “PieWorks is NOT a pizza joint . . . it’s a pizza restaurant” and he was right. I was overwhelmed by the menu choices. Not only do they have pizza pies, but they have salads, sandwiches, pastas, bisque, and desserts. I’m not going to even go into the dessert. Oh my, they were tempting, but I behaved. On a side note, they also cater, so keep them in mind for your next event.

PieWorks Pizza by Design

PieWorks Pizza by Design 3 Cheese and 2mato pizza

I have this little problem. When there are lots of choices, my brain goes into melt-down and I end up picking what appears to be the most simple menu item. I already knew that I loved the PieWorks Seafood Pizza, but I wanted a smaller portion. I ordered the lunch special. $6.99 got me a 7″ Three Cheese and 2mato pizza and a side salad. Simple it was not! The flavors were bursting in my mouth. Perfect lunchtime choice.

The atmosphere at PieWorks is what I’d call upscale casual with a very warm and cozy feel. Lots of nice detail touches. A small detail that the guests at my table noticed was that every table has a bottle of hand sanitizer. Kind of a neat touch for those germ-o-phobes.

PieWorks Pizza by Design Bar Area

PieWorks Pizza by Design Bar Area

The last thing I’ll share is that PieWorks has a great bar area. There is a divider wall that separates it from the dining area. It’s a great place to stop by, have an adult beverage and watch the game. (I had to borrow the picture from their Facebook page because mine came out blurry)

Congratulations to the crew at PieWorks Pizza by Design and welcome back to Bossier City. PieWorks is located at 5000 Benton Road, Suite 10 in the River Rouge Shopping Center.

Go eat and tell them you read my blog.

Two are better than one

Some things are better in pairs. That proved to be true today. Two ribbon cuttings on one of the prettiest days we’ve had in quite a while.

Part One – Christus Schumpert Breast Center

Christus Schumpert Breast Center

Mardi Gras & Mammograms

At the first ribbon cutting of the day at Christus Schumpert Breast Center in Shreveport, the theme was “Mardi Gras and Mammograms”. I arrived thinking I would be attending a standard Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting. I was soon to understand that this would not be a routine gathering.
Christus Schumpert Breast Center

Blessing of the Water at Christus Schumpert Breast Center

The first noticeable difference was that I was way under-dressed. I don’t typically wear t-shirts but today I was sporting the new “Geaux Beauxling” t-shirt since it is Mardi Gras season. Several Mardi Gras Krewe Royalty were in attendance and decked out in full regalia. Absolutely stunning displays of sequins, satin and feathers. The second noticeable difference was that the program called for a Blessing and Dedication. This was definitely a nice touch. I have a special place in my heart for the beauty of a litany.

Differences aside, let me tell you about this well thought out medical facility. Christus Schumpert Breast Center was designed by women for women. The idea is to remove the fear and excuses that are associated with breast cancer. Dr. Dierdre Barfield, Chief Medical Officer, said that they offer non-traditional appointment times in an effort to make it more convenient for working mothers and care givers who typically can’t make appointments during regular office times. They also wanted to create an environment that was less like a medical facility, and more of a relaxing place to soothe anxieties. The center is beautifully decorated and has an almost spa like feel. In fact, you won’t find paper robes here. Patients are treated to spa robes to use during their mammograms. How nice is that? Ladies, you know what I’m talking about when I say I hate those paper robes!

Butterfly Boutique and the Northwest Louisiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure were on hand to provide information about the services they offer to women dealing with breast cancer. Butterfly Boutique specializes in prosthesis, surgical bras, wigs, headcovers, hard to fit bras and compression garments. The Northwest Louisiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure provides support and informational resources to the breast cancer community. The programs and fundraisers at NWLA-SGK have provided funding for groundbreaking breast cancer research, much of which has led to landmark discoveries in the quest to find a cure and eventually prevent breast cancer.

Christus Schumpert Breast Center

Ribbon Cutting at Christus Schumpert Breast Center

Dr. Mark Kraemer, Chief Radiologist, introduced us to Brenda Pierce, who he called a Breast Nurse Navigator. Brenda contacts patients who have had abnormal mammograms, schedules follow ups and provides educational and emotional support for their journey. Brenda understands what patients are going through because she has overcome breast cancer herself. Dr. Kraemer said that Christus Schumpert has drastically reduced the time frames for follow ups and test results. He mentioned that hearing “cancer” is stressful enough without having to wait on results. What formerly took up to six weeks, can now be turned around in several days. Dana Smelser, Business Development & Strategic Planning for Christus Schumpert says that they are the only complete Breast Center in the area.

Christus Schumpert Breast Center is located at 920 Olive Street, Shreveport, LA. Tell them that you read my blog.

Part Two – The Perfect Blend

The Perfect Blend

The Perfect Blend in Bossier City

Stop number two for my diplomat duties today was at The Perfect Blend in Bossier City. I have to be honest in saying that I fully expected to walk into a coffee house. Nope, it’s a really cool smoothie, vitamin, yogurt, supplement store with a friendly, comfortable feel. That’s really the only way to describe it. Most supplement stores feel kind of cold and confusing. This place takes that all away. Quoting their website, The Perfect Blend was an idea that was conceived by two personal trainers who wanted to create a comfortable atmosphere for people to not only shop for supplements, but to be able to ask questions about them, learn diet strategies and workout ideas and enjoy sporting events while having a healthy smoothie or yogurt. Today marked the one year anniversary of the success of The Perfect Blend. Congrats guys!

The Perfect Blend

The Perfect Blend

One of the best things about going to ribbon cuttings is that you sometimes get to try free samples of food and products. Today . . . Free Yogurt! Oh yeah, let me tell you, I tried the New York Cheesecake yogurt. OH YUM! Ok, you caught me, I went back for seconds and tried the plain yogurt too. Well, yogurt and chocolate covered raisins. Hey – I didn’t have lunch! Don’t judge me for being a little bit piggy. I noticed the sign above the self serve yogurt bar said “Pile it high for 35 cents per ounce”. That could be dangerous for me.

At The Perfect Blend, you will find supplements from all of the major companies and independent suppliers, some of which you can’t find at other supplement stores. I considered picking up one of their weight loss supplements, but decided for more yogurt. (I’m so bad!) Next time you are in the Stockell Road area, stop by, meet their friendly staff and pick up your vitamins and supplements. Just don’t do what I did. I couldn’t stop staring at the arms of one of the personal trainers. I’m serious, I couldn’t stop. They were massive and I had to apologize to him for my staring. I hope he wasn’t offended. 🙂 I think I got my payback later when I spilled a huge amount of liquid nacho cheese down the front of my shirt. (yes, eating again – see, I knew I had a problem, but that’s a story for another time)

The Perfect Blend is located at 2091 Stockwell Road, Ste. 10, Bossier City, LA on the corner of Stockwell & Shed Road. Tell them you read my blog.

A Blustery After Hours TLA

Holiday Lanes/Ten Pin Lounge After Hours TLA

Randy didn't let a little rain keep him away.

The moments before an event are always the most worrisome, especially on days when the weather is not cooperating. The Bossier Chamber of Commerce After Hours TLA this month was held at Holiday Lanes in the Ten Pin Lounge. Since I was hosting the event, I wondered how many people might actually show up if rain was added to the mix of the crazy wind. I started second guessing everything, including the amount of food to prepare. When I looked at the clock at 5:08, I was no longer worried. By the end of the evening 70+ people had fared the blustery and rainy weather for the chance to network with other members and have a little fun. If you will notice, click the picture above – Randy was soaked to the bone.

Holiday Lanes/Ten Pin Lounge After Hours TLA

Door Prizes are always a fun time!

I am a little partial since this is my place of employment, but let me say, I heard more than one person saying this was the “funnest” TLA they’ve been to. We had darts, music, adult beverages, food from the Striker’s Cafe, door prizes and of course Bowling.
Holiday Lanes/Ten Pin Lounge After Hours TLA

The winner of the Destiny Day Spa & Salon Free Haircut

My favorite part of the evening was the door prize pull. I think everyone in the room covets the Destiny Day Spa & Salon gift certificates, but the lucky winner of the free haircut didn’t have a strand of hair on his head. We were all swarming around him trying to nab it from him. (HA!)

Holiday Lanes/Ten Pin Lounge After Hours TLA

Holiday Lanes/Ten Pin Lounge After Hours TLA

Holiday Lanes is a great place to gather with friends, family and co-workers. It’s the perfect place to throw a party! Whether you’re planning a corporate outing, a birthday party, a church get-together or family reunion, you’re going to have a great time at Holiday Lanes. Not only can we help you have fun bowling, we can also furnish wonderful food and beverages for your group.

I’m really excited about scheduling some “Play Therapy” team building sessions. I haven’t had the pleasure of facilitating an event, but am looking forward to it. Have you heard about it? A typical “Play Therapy” session includes 90 minutes to 2 hours of play — bowling, billiards or arcade — a facilitator and awards. We can also include food for your group if you choose to have lunch with us. You will see new leaders emerge and witness your co-workers cooperating with great teamwork as they compete against each other. To paraphrase Plato, you will learn more about your co-workers in one hour of play than you will in a lifetime of conversation. Build teamwork, create recognition, exercise, reduce stress and have fun!

I wanted to also share a thanks to Ryan McCutcheon & Kathryn Day – the artists who painted the great entry ways to The Ten Pin Lounge & Striker’s Cafe. I called them just a few weeks ago and they cranked out a design and worked really hard, even on snow days, to have the doors ready by today. If you need graphic artists, give him a call. (Artie Nevel Signs did the awning)

Thanks again to everyone who came out tonight and helped reduce my worries. It really was a fun evening and I look forward to attending the next Bossier Chamber of Commerce event. If you haven’t joined the Chamber, you are missing out on lots of networking – call 746-0252 to get more details about becoming a member.

Diplomat Duty

Diplomat Brown Bag Luncheon

Diplomat Brown Bag Luncheon - 2/23/11

This post doesn’t necessarily deal with new businesses, but instead attendance at my first Diplomat’s Brown Bag Luncheon. Each month the Bossier Chamber Diplomats meet and discuss activities, events and relevant information concerning Diplomat duties. Currently there are 28 Volunteer Diplomats that serve the Bossier Chamber of Commerce.
I was running late, which is nothing new for me. (I will be late to my own funeral . . . no really I have standing instructions to be brought in late – hahah!) I assumed that “Brown Bag” meant bring your own lunch and because I was running late, I figured I would have to wait until after the meeting. Boy, was I wrong. Several people brought enough to share. I’m not sure this is a regular occurrence, but I was glad since I came in empty handed. Today’s meeting had a “Go Bananas” theme in recognition of National Banana Bread Day. Who said getting serious work done couldn’t be fun?
Happy Birthday Jack, Stacie & Kary

Happy Birthday Jack, Stacie & Kary

And speaking of fun, Happy Birthday to Jack Skaggs of Raising Canes, Stacie Donaldson of Direct Mail Marketing, Inc, and Kary Landry of State Farm Insurance.

As I learn the ropes of being a Diplomat, I am starting to understand what a wonderful job the Bossier Chamber of Commerce does for local business.

While I won’t bore you with the details of the meeting, let me just say that it is apparent that member satisfaction is at the top of the list of priorities. If you are considering joining the Chamber of Commerce, I recommend doing it as fast as possible. Member benefits include business referrals, ribbon cuttings, press releases and so much more. For me, the networking connections alone are a huge value. Call the Chamber Office to have someone give you more details: 318-746-0252.

Hey, don’t forget tomorrow, Feb 24 from 5 – 7 pm is the Bossier Chamber of Commerce After Hours TLA (The Last Appointment) at The Ten Pin Lounge at Holiday Lanes 3316 Old Minden Road in Bossier City . Entry fee is $5 for chamber members, $10 non-members. 1st two adult beverages are free and there will be free food & bowling. Since I will be your host, I hope you will come out and see what the chamber is all about. Bring lots of business cards because this is the time to network! (plus I really need people to show up – job security, you know!)

My Time as a Diplomat

Robin Williams

Robin Williams

Let me start by introducing myself: I am Robin Williams and I am the Marketing Maven at Holiday Lanes in Bossier City. I recently have become a volunteer Diplomat for the Bossier Chamber of Commerce. I’ve never written a blog, but thought this just might be a great time to give it a try.

As a diplomat, my purpose will be to promote the Bossier Chamber of Commerce and the entire Bossier Shreveport community. (Ok – yes, I copied word for word the “Diplomat Organization Purpose” found in my orientation guide.) Hey, I’m new at this. I’m still figuring it all out.

My goal for this blog is to update the community on experiences that I have while serving as a diplomat. I will post information about new businesses that have joined the Chamber, along with any special events that I may attend. Networking with the business community is such a great way to meet new people and help local businesses succeed in our area. I hope that someone out there will stumble upon my blog and find it useful.
